Sports Orthopaedic Surgeon


Mark graduated with a medical degree from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, in 1990. He then completed a Masters in Sports Medicine at the same university, and subsequently a Doctorate in Science.

Mark also completed the Sports Physician specialist training program (FACSP) in Australia, before training as an orthopaedic surgeon (FRACS). Mark is also a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Porter has the highest level of academic qualification for his sub-specialty of sports orthopaedic surgery.

Mark has extensive experience in the management of sports injuries. Added to his comprehensive academic qualifications, is the experience he has gained through years of personal involvement in a variety of competitive sports.

Most notably, he competed both nationally and internationally, as an amateur and professional boxer, over a period of 16 years.

Mark has also been running marathons for over 30 years and completed 46 marathons. He carries this wealth of personal experience into his sports orthopaedics practice.

Dr. Porter has sub-specialized in “sports orthopaedics”, that is, arthroscopic procedures of the upper and lower limbs. He is the only orthopaedic surgeon in Canberra to sub-specialize solely in this area. His sub-specialty typically includes:

        Knee - arthroscopy, reconstruction (ACL, PCL, multi-ligament

                      injuries), osteotomies, trauma;

        Shoulder - arthroscopy, stabilization, rotator cuff repairs, trauma;

        Ankle - arthroscopy, ligament stabilization, trauma

        Elbow - arthroscopy, stabilization, trauma; and

        Wrist and hand - arthroscopy, carpal tunnel

                       decompression, wrist ligament reconstruction, trauma.
